The Hot Stars of Old Open Clusters: M67, NGC 188, and NGC 6791
O'Connell, Robert W.; Bohlin, Ralph C.; Landsman, Wayne +4 more
We analyze ultraviolet (~1500 Å) images of the old open clusters M67, NGC 188, and NGC 6791 obtained with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) during the second flight of the Astro observatory in 1995 March. Twenty stars are detected on the UIT image of M67, including 11 blue stragglers, seven white dwarf candidates, and the yellow giant-white …
Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope Observations of the Magellanic Clouds
Parker, Joel Wm.; O'Connell, Robert W.; Bohlin, Ralph C. +8 more
We present wide-field far-ultraviolet (FUV; 1300-1800 Å) images of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC, SMC). These data were obtained by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) during the Astro-1 (1990 December 1-10) and Astro-2 (1995 March 2-18) missions; the images provide an extensive FUV mosaic of the SMC and contain numerous regions i…
Structure, Excitation, and Kinematics of the Luminous Herbig-Haro Objects 80/81
Raga, A. C.; Reipurth, Bo; Heathcote, Steve
We present a detailed study of the Herbig-Haro objects HH 80/81, twin working surfaces in the highly collimated outflow driven by a luminous young star. High angular resolution emission line images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope are used together with ground-based low- and high-dispersion spectroscopy, and proper motion measurements to p…
Integrated Ultraviolet Spectra and Line Indices of M31 Globular Clusters and the Cores of Elliptical Galaxies
Rieke, Marcia J.; Frogel, Jay A.; O'Connell, Robert W. +6 more
We present observations of the integrated light of four M31 globular clusters (MIV, MII, K280, and K58) and of the cores of six elliptical galaxies (NGC 3605, 3608, 5018, 5831, 6127, and 7619) made with the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. The spectra cover the range 2200-4800 Å at a resolution of 8 Å with signal-to-noise r…
Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Investigation of Three Short-Period Binary Stars
Rucinski, Slavek M.
Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer spectroscopic observations (SW, MW, and LW bands, covering 80-160, 170-350, and 300-450 Å with resolutions 0.5, 1, and 2 Å, respectively) and photometric observations (Deep Sky Survey [DSS], broadband 70-140 Å) have been obtained for two contact binaries, 44i Boo B and VW Cep, and one close but detached binary, ER Vul.…
