Spectroscopy of the unique degenerate binary star LS I +61 303.
Hutchings, J. B.; Crampton, D.
IUE ultraviolet, and ground-based spectroscopic data are presented and discussed. The primary is a rapidly rotating B0 main-sequence star, with a stable shell. The radial velocities indicate binary motion in a 26.5-day orbit (in agreement with the radio flaring period), with a secondary of mass 1.1-1.5 solar masses. The broad Balmer emission appea…
The ultraviolet spectrum of the magnetic degenerate star GD 229.
Green, R. F.; Liebert, J.
The ultraviolet spectrum obtained with the IUE satellite of the magnetic degenerate white dwarf star GD 229 is presented. The ultraviolet energy distribution measured by the short- and long-wavelength cameras covering the range 1170-3200 A, when combined with optical data, indicates a best fit blackbody temperature of 16,000 K, which is significan…
The ultraviolet spectrum of the twin-degenerate interacting binary G 61-29.
Lambert, D. L.; Slovak, M. H.
A low-resolution IUE spectrum (1200 A-1900 A) of the twin-degenerate white-dwarf binary star G61-29 is presented. A comparison is made to similar IUE spectra of the old novae DQ Her and V603 Aql. G61-29 shows N V 1240 A and He II 1640 A in emission. Unlike the old novae, the C IV 1550 A doublet is not present. It is proposed that the mass-losing H…
Boron and beryllium in early-type peculiar stars.
Sadakane, K.; Jugaku, J.
High-dispersion ultraviolet spectra of eleven early-type peculiar stars have been obtained with the IUE. The B II resonance line at 1362.46 Å is clearly present in two Mn-Hg stars (κ Cnc and HR 7.361) and in 20 Tao, while the presence of this line cannot be confirmed in the remaining eight stars. The B II subordinate lines near 1624 Å and the B II…
Stephanian's star : the energy distribution reveals a nontypical cataclysmic variable.
Szkody, P.
Einstein, IUE, optical multichannel spectrophotometry, and IR observations of Stepanian's star are discussed in terms of other known cataclysmics. While the X-ray flux and IUE emission-line data are similar to that of dwarf novae, the total continuum flux distribution from uv-IR is cooler (peaking near a 10,000 K blackbody) and is unlike either a …
The ultraviolet spectrum of the peculiar A star HD 51418.
Shore, S. N.; Adelman, S. J.
High-dispersion observations of the peculiar A star HD 51418 have been carried out in the ultraviolet by the IUE satellite. Atomic resonance lines observed in the regions 1800-2000 and 2500-3000 A include those of Mg II, Ti II, Cr I, Cr II, Mn II, Fe II and Zn II, and possibly Si II, S I, V II, Fe I, Co II, Y II, Ce II, Ce III, Eu II, Eu III and T…
IUE spectroscopy of hot binary stars HD 108,HD 149404 and HD 163181.
Hutchings, J. B.; van Heteren, J.
High-dispersion IUE UV spectra of the hot binaries HD 108, HD 149404 and HD 163181 obtained at several orbital phases is presented in an attempt to assess the influence of the companion on stellar wind outflow. Spectra of HD 108, which has an extreme Of spectrum in the visible, show velocity changes over a range of 40 km/sec in the weak absorption…
IUE spectra of the hot close binary V Pup.
Koch, R. H.; Pfeiffer, R. J.; Perry, P. M. +1 more
Low- and high-dispersion ultraviolet spectra obtained by the IUE of the early B-type close binary V Puppis are reported. The continuum derived from the low-dispersion images is consistent with a solar abundance model of effective temperature 25,000 K and log surface gravity 4.0. The high-dispersion spectra show shallow double lines, representing D…
IUE spectra of RS PUP and HD 20722 : stars in symmetric dusty nebulae.
Johnson, H. M.
Spectra obtained by the IUE satellite of the Cepheid variable RS Puppis and the K giant HD 20722, both of which are surrounded by symmetric nebula, are presented. Exposures were made in 1980 with the long wavelength redundant camera and 10 x 20 arcmin focal plane aperture at a spatial resolution of about 5 arcsec and spectral resolution about 6 A.…
