Discoveries of Diffuse Iron Line Sources from the Sgr B Region
Maeda, Yoshitomo; Koyama, Katsuji; Matsumoto, Hironori +8 more
The radio complex Sgr B region was observed with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) on board Suzaku. This region exhibits diffuse iron lines at 6.4, 6.7, and 6.9keV, which are Kα lines of Fe I (neutral iron), Fe XXV (He-like iron), and Fe XXVI (H-like iron), respectively. The high energy resolving power of the XIS provided separate maps of the K…
X-Ray Spectral Study of the Extended Emission, `the Cap', Located 11.6kpc above the Disk of M82
Koyama, Katsuji; Mitsuda, Kazuhisa; Fujimoto, Ryuichi +11 more
The extended X-ray emission from `the Cap' region, located 11' (11.6kpc) above the disk of the starburst galaxy M82, has been observed with Suzaku and XMM-Newton. Owing to the good energy resolution and the large collecting area of the XIS on Suzaku, combined with similar properties of the EPIC instrument on XMM-Newton, we have clearly detected K-…
Small-Scale Magnetic-Flux Emergence Observed with Hinode Solar Optical Telescope
Matsumoto, Takuma; Shibata, Kazunari; Tsuneta, Saku +14 more
We observed small-scale magnetic-flux emergence in a sunspot moat region by the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) aboard the Hinode satellite. We analyzed filtergram images observed at wavelengths of Fe 6302Å, G band, and CaII H. In Stokes I images of Fe 6302Å, emerging magnetic flux was recognized as dark lanes. In the G band, they showed to be their…
Flight Performance of the AKARI Cryogenic System
Nakagawa, Takao; Murakami, Masahide; Yoshida, Seiji +11 more
We describe the flight performance of the cryogenic system of the infrared astronomical satellite AKARI, which was successfully launched on 2006 February 21 (UT). AKARI carries a 68.5 cm telescope together with two focal plane instruments, Infrared Cameras (IRC) and Far Infrared Surveyor (FIS), all of which are cooled down to cryogenic temperature…
Suzaku Observations of the Centaurus Cluster: Absence of Bulk Motions in the Intracluster Medium
Fabian, Andrew C.; Sanders, Jeremy S.; Kelley, Richard L. +13 more
The Centaurus cluster (z=0.0104) was observed with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) onboard the Suzaku X-ray satellite in three pointings, one centered on the cluster core and the other two offset by ±8' in declination. To search for possible bulk motions of the intracluster medium, the central energy of a He-like Fe K line (at a rest-frame en…
Initial Results on Line-of-Sight Field Calibrations of SP/NFI Data Taken by SOT/Hinode
Moon, Yong-Jae; Tsuneta, Saku; Chae, Jongchul +13 more
We present initial results on the line-of-sight field calibration of the two kinds of Stokes I and V data taken by the Solar Optical Telescope on the satellite Hinode: spectral profiles of Stokes I and V parameters recorded on the Spectro-polarimeter (SP), and monochromatic images of the same parameters recorded on the Narrow-band Filter Imager (N…
X-Ray Spectrum of Sagittarius A East
Maeda, Yoshitomo; Koyama, Katsuji; Matsumoto, Hironori +5 more
Sgr A East is a young SNR located in the Galactic Center (GC) region. Since the GC region is occupied by diffuse X-ray emission (GCDX) with a strong 6.7keV line, an estimation of the GCDX is crucial to study the X-ray spectrum of Sgr A East. The flux and spectrum of the GCDX are found to be smoothly distributed around and across Sgr A East, and he…
Small-Scale X-Ray/EUV Jets Seen in Hinode XRT and TRACE
Chae, Jongchul; Kim, Yeon-Han; Park, Young-Deuk +4 more
We present the morphological and kinematic characteristics of three small-scale X-ray/EUV jets simultaneously observed by the Hinode XRT and the TRACE. For this, we examined all XRT movies with a thin Al/Poly filter from 2006 October 20 to 2007 April 8, and then found 34 small-scale eruptions. We next took a look at the corresponding TRACE 171/195…
The Analysis of Penumbral Fine Structure Using an Advanced Inversion Technique
Tsuneta, Saku; Shimizu, Toshifumi; Ichimoto, Kiyoshi +8 more
We present a method to study the penumbral fine structure using data obtained by the spectropolarimeter on board Hinode. For the first time, the penumbral filaments can be considered as being resolved in spectropolarimetric measurements. This enables us to use inversion codes with only one-component model atmospheres, and thus to assign the obtain…
Suzaku Observation of Two Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources in NGC 1313
Done, Chris; Isobe, Naoki; Petre, Robert +19 more
Two ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in the nearby Sb galaxy NGC 1313, named X-1 and X-2, were observed with Suzaku on 2005 September 15. During the observation for a net exposure of 28 ks (but over a gross time span of 90ks), both objects varied in intensity by about 50%. The 0.4-10keV X-ray luminosities of X-1 and X-2 were measured as 2.5 × 10…
