Drift-Alfvén vortices at the ion Larmor radius scale
DOI: 10.1063/1.2844744 Bibcode: 2008PhPl...15b2903O

Krasnoselskikh, V. V.; Pokhotelov, O. A.; Onishchenko, O. G.

The theory of nonlinear drift-Alfvén waves with the spatial scales comparable to the ion Larmor radius is developed. It is shown that the set of equations describing the nonlinear dynamics of drift-Alfvén waves in a quasistationary regime admits a solution in the form of a solitary dipole vortex. The vortex structures propagating perpendicular to …

Transport of transient solar wind particles in Earth's cusps
DOI: 10.1063/1.2965825 Bibcode: 2008PhPl...15h0702P

Dandouras, I.; Rème, H.; Parks, G. K. +7 more

An important problem in space physics still not understood well is how the solar wind enters the Earth's magnetosphere. Evidence is presented that transient solar wind particles produced by solar disturbances can appear in the Earth's mid-altitude (~5 RE geocentric) cusps with densities nearly equal to those in the magnetosheath. That t…

Statistics of beam-driven waves in plasmas with ambient fluctuations: Reduced-parameter approach
DOI: 10.1063/1.2977979 Bibcode: 2008PhPl...15i2110T

Robinson, P. A.; Tyshetskiy, Yu.; Cairns, I. H.

A reduced-parameter (RP) model of quasilinear wave-plasma interactions is used to analyze statistical properties of beam-driven waves in plasmas with ambient density fluctuations. The probability distribution of wave energies in such a system is shown to have a relatively narrow peak just above the thermal wave level, and a power-law tail at high …
