We present the analysis of simultaneous X-ray (RXTE) and radio (VLA) observations of two atoll-type neutron star X-ray binaries: 4U 1820 - 30 and Ser X-1. Both sources were steadily in the soft (`banana') X-ray state during the observations. We have detected the radio counterpart of 4U 1820 - 30 at 4.86 and 8.46 GHz at a flux density of ~0.1 mJy. …

An XMM-Newton observation of Ark 120: the X-ray spectrum of a `bare' Seyfert 1 nucleus
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2004.07769.x Bibcode: 2004MNRAS.351..193V

We report on a long (100 ks) XMM-Newton observation of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Arakelian 120. The source previously showed no signs of intrinsic reddening in its infrared-ultraviolet continuum and previous observations had shown no evidence for ionized absorption in either the ultraviolet or X-ray bands. The new XMM-Newton Reflection Grating S…

Chemical abundances of planetary nebulae from optical recombination lines - I. Observations and plasma diagnostics
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2004.08155.x Bibcode: 2004MNRAS.353.1231L

We have obtained deep optical spectra of medium resolution for a sample of 12 Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe). Optical recombination lines (ORLs) from carbon, nitrogen and oxygen have been detected in 11 of them and neon ORLs in nine of them. All spectra were obtained by scanning a long slit across the nebular surface, yielding relative line inte…

Formation and evolution of S0 galaxies: a SAURON case study of NGC 7332
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2004.07704.x Bibcode: 2004MNRAS.350...35F

Bacon, Roland; Emsellem, Eric; Peletier, Reynier F. +8 more

We present SAURON integral-field observations of the S0 galaxy NGC 7332. Existing broad-band ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry reveals a double-disc structure and a boxy bulge interpreted as a bar viewed close to edge-on. The SAURON two-dimensional stellar kinematic maps confirm the existence of the bar and inner disc but al…

Radio, optical and infrared observations of CLASS B0128+437
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2004.07701.x Bibcode: 2004MNRAS.350..949B

McKean, J. P.; Biggs, A. D.; Browne, I. W. A. +4 more

We present new observations of the gravitational lens system CLASS B0128+437 made in the optical, infrared and radio regimes. Hubble Space Telescope observations detect only a very faint, extended object in the I band with no obvious emission from the lensed images visible; no detection at all is made in the V band. The lens system is detected wit…

A phase-resolved XMM-Newton campaign on the colliding-wind binary HD 152248
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2004.07719.x Bibcode: 2004MNRAS.350..809S

Gosset, E.; Rauw, G.; Vreux, J. -M. +2 more

We report the first results of an XMM-Newton monitoring campaign of the open cluster NGC 6231 in the Sco OB 1 association. This first paper focuses on the massive colliding-wind binary HD 152248, which is the brightest X-ray source of the cluster. The campaign, with a total duration of 180 ks, was split into six separate observations, following th…

XMM-Newton observations of polars in low accretion states
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2004.07732.x Bibcode: 2004MNRAS.350.1373R

Cropper, Mark; Wu, Kinwah; Ramsay, Gavin +3 more

<heading id="h0" level="1">ABSTARCT</heading> We have made a series of snap-shot observations of 37 polars using XMM-Newton. We found that 16 of these systems were in a low, or much reduced, accretion state. Of those, six were not detected in X-rays. This suggests that in any survey of polars, around half will be in a low accretion sta…

The Hubble Deep Field North SCUBA Super-map - II. Multiwavelength properties
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2004.08335.x Bibcode: 2004MNRAS.355..485B

Nandra, Kirpal; Halpern, Mark; Chapman, Scott +3 more

We present radio, optical and X-ray-detected counterparts to the submillimetre sources found using SCUBA in the Hubble Deep Field North region (GOODS-N). A new counterpart identification statistic is developed to identify properties of galaxies detected at other wavelengths that can be used to aid counterpart identification. We discriminate betwee…

Asteroseismology of the β Cephei star ν Eridani - III. Extended frequency analysis and mode identification
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2004.07791.x Bibcode: 2004MNRAS.351..324D

Handler, G.; De Ridder, J.; Heiter, U. +7 more

Using the large photometric and spectroscopic data sets of the ν Eridani multisite campaign given in our two recent papers (Aerts et al. and Handler et al.), we present an extended frequency analysis and a photometric mode identification. For the extended frequency analysis, we used an improved radial velocity time series, the second-moment time s…

Photometry of Magellanic Cloud clusters with the Advanced Camera for Surveys - I. The old Large Magellanic Cloud clusters NGC 1928, 1939 and Reticulum
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2004.07908.x Bibcode: 2004MNRAS.352..153M

Mackey, A. D.; Gilmore, G. F.

We present the results of photometric measurements from images of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) globular clusters NGC 1928, 1939 and Reticulum taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. Exposures through the F555W and F814W filters result in high-accuracy colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for these three clusters. …
