The ultraviolet spectroscopic evolution of the low-luminosity tidal disruption event iPTF16fnl
Kochanek, C. S.; Stanek, K. Z.; Shappee, B. J. +14 more
We present the ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopic evolution of a tidal disruption event (TDE) for the first time. After the discovery of the nearby TDE iPTF16fnl, we obtained a series of observations with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The dominant emission features closely resemble those seen…
MAHALO Deep Cluster Survey I. Accelerated and enhanced galaxy formation in the densest regions of a protocluster at z = 2.5
Prochaska, J. Xavier; Cai, Zheng; Suzuki, Tomoko L. +6 more
We carried out deep H α narrowband imaging with 10 h net integrations towards the young protocluster, USS1558-003 at z = 2.53 with the Subaru Telescope. This system is composed of four dense groups with massive local overdensities, traced by 107 H α emitters (HAEs) with stellar masses and dust-corrected star formation rates down to 1 × 108
The VMC survey - XXVI. Structure of the Small Magellanic Cloud from RR Lyrae stars
van Loon, J. Th.; Clementini, G.; Ripepi, V. +10 more
We present results from the analysis of 2997 fundamental mode RR Lyrae variables located in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). For these objects, near-infrared time series photometry from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC) and visual light curves from the OGLE IV (Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment IV) survey are available…
Obscured star formation in bright z ≃ 7 Lyman-break galaxies
Bowler, R. A. A.; McLure, R. J.; Dunlop, J. S. +2 more
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array observations of the rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) dust continuum emission of six bright Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z ≃ 7. One LBG is detected (5.2σ at peak emission), whilst the others remain individually undetected at the 3σ level. The average FIR luminosity of the sample is found to be …
Pristine dwarf galaxy survey - I. A detailed photometric and spectroscopic study of the very metal-poor Draco II satellite
Geha, Marla; Navarro, Julio F.; Martin, Nicolas +17 more
We present a detailed study of the faint Milky Way satellite Draco II (Dra II) from deep CFHT/MegaCam broad-band g and i photometry and narrow-band metallicity-sensitive CaHK observations, along with follow-up Keck II/DEIMOS multi-object spectroscopy. Forward modelling of the deep photometry allows us to refine the structural and photometric prope…
Quantifying the AGN-driven outflows in ULIRGs (QUADROS) - I: VLT/Xshooter observations of nine nearby objects
Tadhunter, Clive; Santoro, Francesco; Rodríguez Zaurín, Javier +3 more
Although now routinely incorporated into hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy evolution, the true importance of the feedback effect of the outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) remains uncertain from an observational perspective. This is due to a lack of accurate information on the densities, radial scales and level of dust extinction of t…
Supernovae 2016bdu and 2005gl, and their link with SN 2009ip-like transients: another piece of the puzzle
Drake, A. J.; Lundqvist, P.; Djorgovski, S. G. +52 more
Supernova (SN) 2016bdu is an unusual transient resembling SN 2009ip. SN 2009ip-like events are characterized by a long-lasting phase of erratic variability which ends with two luminous outbursts a few weeks apart. The second outburst is significantly more luminous (about 3 mag) than the first. In the case of SN 2016bdu, the first outburst (Event A…
LOFAR discovery of an ultra-steep radio halo and giant head-tail radio galaxy in Abell 1132
Prandoni, I.; Brunetti, G.; Morganti, R. +16 more
Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) observations at 144 MHz have revealed large-scale radio sources in the unrelaxed galaxy cluster Abell 1132. The cluster hosts diffuse radio emission on scales of ∼650 kpc near the cluster centre and a head-tail (HT) radio galaxy, extending up to 1 Mpc, south of the cluster centre. The central diffuse radio emission is n…
Deep learning for galaxy surface brightness profile fitting
Huertas-Company, M.; Domínguez Sánchez, H.; Dimauro, P. +3 more
Numerous ongoing and future large area surveys (e.g. Dark Energy Survey, EUCLID, Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope) will increase by several orders of magnitude the volume of data that can be exploited for galaxy morphology studies. The full potential of these surveys can be unlocked only with the development of…
A low Lyman Continuum escape fraction of <10 per cent for extreme [O III] emitters in an overdensity at z ∼ 3.5
Tran, Kim-Vy H.; Forrest, Ben; Holden, Bradford P. +2 more
Recent work has suggested that extreme [O III] emitting star-forming galaxies are important to reionization. Relatedly, [O III]/[O II] has been put forward as an indirect estimator of the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction (fesc) at z ≳ 4.5 when the opaque IGM renders LyC photons unobservable. Using deep archival U-band (VLT/VIMOS) i…
