Eccentric orbits and apsidal motion in the eclipsing binaries EK Cep and HS Her
Gazeas, Kosmas; Latković, Olivera; Čeki, Atila +2 more
We present the first modern analysis of two young eclipsing binaries, EK Cep and HS Her, based on new ground-based CCD multicolour light curves and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observations, radial velocity curves, and eclipse timing measurements. The orbital and stellar parameters of the stars are determined by Roche modelling…
New approaches for faint source detection in hard X-ray surveys
Bird, A. J.; Lepingwell, V. A.; Gunn, S. R.
We demonstrate two new approaches that have been developed to aid the production of future hard X-ray catalogues, and specifically to reduce the reliance on human intervention during the detection of faint excesses in maps that also contain systematic noise. A convolutional neural network has been trained on data from the INTEGRAL/ISGRI telescope …
Solar-like oscillations and ellipsoidal variations in TESS observations of the binary 12 Boötis
Chaplin, William J.; Stassun, Keivan G.; Basu, Sarbani +14 more
Binary stars in which oscillations can be studied in either or both components can provide powerful constraints on our understanding of stellar physics. The bright binary 12 Boötis (12 Boo) is a particularly promising system because the primary is roughly 60 per cent brighter than the secondary despite being only a few per cent more massive. Both …
Rise and fall of silicate dust in RS Ophiuchi following the 2006 eruption
Gehrz, R. D.; Eyres, S. P. S.; Evans, A. +4 more
We present an analysis of archival Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) observations of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi obtained on several occasions, beginning about 7 months after the outburst in 2006. These data show atomic emission lines, absorption bands due to photospheric SiO, and the well-known silicate dust features at 9.7 and $18\, \mu$m. …
