The Tully-Fisher relation of distant field galaxies
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2005.09867.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.366..308B

Milvang-Jensen, B.; Aragón-Salamanca, A.; Bamford, S. P.

We examine the evolution of the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) using a sample of 89 field spirals for which we have measured confident rotation velocities (Vrot). This sample covers the redshift range 0.1 <~z<~ 1, with a median of <z>= 0.33. The best-fitting TFR has a slope consistent with that measured locally, and we find no …

High-metallicity, photoionized gas in intergalactic large-scale filaments
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2005.09962.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.367..139A

Frye, Brenda L.; Bowen, David V.; Tripp, Todd M. +3 more

We present high-resolution ultraviolet spectra of absorption-line systems towards the low-z quasi-stellar object (QSO) HS 0624+6907 (zQSO= 0.3700). Coupled with ground-based imaging and spectroscopic galaxy redshifts, we find evidence that many of these absorbers do not arise in galaxy haloes but rather are truly intergalactic gas cloud…

On the cross-correlation of sub-mm sources and optically selected galaxies
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2006.10158.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.368..732B

Mobasher, Bahram; Pope, Alexandra; Scott, Douglas +1 more

Bright submillimetre (sub-mm) galaxies are expected to arise in massive highly biased haloes, and hence exhibit strong clustering. We argue that a valuable tool for measuring these clustering properties is the cross-correlation of sub-mm galaxies with faint optically selected sources. We analyse populations of sub-mm detected and optical galaxies …

A far-infrared molecular and atomic line survey of the Orion KL region
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2006.10518.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.370..597L

Barlow, M. J.; Cernicharo, J.; Goicoechea, J. R. +8 more

We have carried out a high spectral resolution (λ/Δλ ~ 6800-9700) line survey towards the Orion Kleinmann-Low (KL) cluster from 44 to 188 µm. The observations were taken with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) in Fabry-Pérot mode, on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). A total of 152 lines are clearly detected and a further 34 fe…

Photometry of Magellanic Cloud clusters with the Advanced Camera for Surveys - II. The unique LMC cluster ESO 121-SC03
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2006.10342.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.369..921M

Mackey, A. D.; Gilmore, G. F.; Payne, M. J.

We present the results of photometric measurements from images of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) cluster ESO 121-SC03 taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. Our resulting colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) reaches 3 mag below the main-sequence turn-off, and represents by far the deepest observation of this cl…

Galaxies under the cosmic microscope: resolved spectroscopy and new constraints on the z = 1 Tully-Fisher relation
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2006.10273.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.368.1631S

Kneib, J. -P.; Smith, Graham P.; Smail, Ian +5 more

We exploit the gravitational potential of massive cluster lenses to probe the emission-line properties of six z = 1 galaxies which appear as highly magnified luminous arcs. Using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) integral field spectrograph together with detailed cluster lens models, we reconstruct the intrinsic morphologies and two-dime…

Where are the sources of the near-infrared background?
DOI: 10.1111/j.1745-3933.2005.00129.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.367L..11S

Ferrara, Andrea; Salvaterra, Ruben

The observed near-infrared background excess over light from known galaxies is commonly ascribed to redshifted radiation from early, very massive, Population III (Pop III) stars. We show here that this interpretation must be discarded as it largely overpredicts the number of J-dropouts and Lyα emitters in ultradeep field searches. Independently of…

On the nitrogen abundance of fast, low-ionization emission regions: the outer knots of the planetary nebula NGC 7009
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2005.09794.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.365.1039G

Corradi, R. L. M.; Gonçalves, D. R.; Ercolano, B. +2 more

We have constructed a 3D photoionization model of a planetary nebula (PN) similar in structure to NGC 7009 with its outer pair of knots (also known as FLIERs - fast, low-ionization emission regions). The work is motivated by the fact that the strong [NII]λ6583 line emission from FLIERs in many PNe has been attributed to a significant local overabu…

The quest for Type 2 quasars: Chandra observations of luminous obscured quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2006.11033.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.373..321V

Comastri, Andrea; Vignali, Cristian; Alexander, Dave M.

We report on new Chandra exploratory observations of six candidate Type 2 quasars at z = 0.49-0.73 selected among the most [OIII] luminous emitters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Under the assumption that [OIII] is a proxy for the intrinsic luminosity of the central source, their predicted rest-frame X-ray luminosities are L2-10keV…

Solar FLAG hare and hounds: on the extraction of rotational p-mode splittings from seismic, Sun-as-a-star data
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2006.10358.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.369..985C

Baudin, F.; Jiménez-Reyes, S. J.; García, R. A. +18 more

We report on results from the first solar Fitting at Low-Angular degree Group (solar FLAG) hare-and-hounds exercise. The group is concerned with the development of methods for extracting the parameters of low-l solar p-mode data (`peak bagging'), collected by Sun-as-a-star observations. Accurate and precise estimation of the fundamental parameters…
