Infrared spectroscopy of Sakurai's object
Eyres, S. P. S.; Salama, A.; Evans, A. +2 more
We present near (ground-based) and far (ISO) infrared spectroscopy of Sakurai's object. As in the case of the optical spectrum, between 1996 and 1997 April the near-infrared spectrum underwent a dramatic change to later spectral type, and there is some evidence that the spectrum continued to evolve during 1997. Molecular features of carbon-bearing…
Discovery of extended radio emission in the young cluster Wd1
Waters, L. B. F. M.; Steele, I. A.; Fender, R. P. +4 more
We present 10-µm ISO-SWS and Australia Telescope Compact Array observations of the region in the cluster Wd1 in Ara centred on the B[e] star Ara C. An ISO-SWS spectrum reveals emission from highly ionized species in the vicinity of the star, suggesting a secondary source of excitation in the region. We find strong radio emission at both 3.5 …
Infrared mapping of the dust disc around VEGA
Walker, H. J.; Klaas, U.; Heinrichsen, I.
ISOPHOT has been used to perform high-resolution 60-µm scans of Vega, and these have been compared with those from gammaDra, to obtain a Gaussian width of 22+/-2 arcsec. The dust disc around Vega has been mapped, resolving it at 60 and 90 µm with ISOPHOT. At 90 µm a Gaussian width of 36+/-3 arsec has been derived. In addition, mu…
Planetary nebulae with ISO: A58 and A78 - nebulae with hydrogen-poor ejecta
Kimeswenger, S.; Kerber, F.; Weinberger, R.
We present ISO observations of A58 and A78. Both objects are suspected to have undergone late He flashes (`born-again' nebulae). With ISOCAM we have been able to obtain data of much higher spatial resolution over the wavelength range 4.5-18 µm than has been possible in the past. In order to extract full information from our data we have deve…
Dark haloes of spiral galaxies: ISO photometry
Gilmore, Gerard; Unavane, M.
We exclude hydrogen-burning stars, of any mass above the hydrogen-burning limit and any metallicity, as significant contributors to the massive haloes deduced from rotation curves to dominate the outer parts of spiral galaxies. We present and analyse images of four nearly edge-on bulgeless spiral galaxies (UGC 711, NGC 2915, UGC 12426, UGC 1459) o…
ISO observations of molecular hydrogen in the DR21 bipolar outflow
Smith, Michael D.; Davis, Christopher J.; Eisloffel, Jochen
We demonstrate that a wide range of molecular hydrogen excitation can be observed in protostellar outflows at wavelengths in excess of 5 mum. Cold H_2 in DR21 is detected through the pure rotational transitions in the ground vibrational level (0-0). Hot H_2 is detected in pure rotational transitions within higher vibrational levels (1-1, 1-2, etc.…
