Long-period Ap stars discovered with TESS data: The northern ecliptic hemisphere
Kurtz, D. W.; Mathys, G.; Holdsworth, D. L.
The rotation periods of the magnetic Ap stars span five to six orders of magnitude. While it is well established that period differentiation must have taken place at the pre-main sequence stage, the physical processes that lead to it remain elusive. The existence of Ap stars that have rotation periods of tens to hundreds of years is particularly i…
Eruptions from coronal bright points: A spectroscopic view by IRIS of a mini-filament eruption, QSL reconnection, and reconnection-driven outflows
Madjarska, Maria S.; Wiegelmann, Thomas; Mackay, Duncan H. +2 more
Context. Our study investigates a mini-filament eruption associated with cancelling magnetic fluxes. The eruption originates from a small-scale loop complex commonly known as a coronal bright point (CBP). The event is uniquely recorded in both the imaging and spectroscopic data taken with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS).
Aims…
The outermost stellar halo of NGC 5128 (Centaurus A): Radial structure
Rejkuba, M.; Greggio, L.; Crnojević, D. +2 more
Context. The extended stellar halos of galaxies contain important clues for investigating their assembly history and evolution.
Aims: We investigate the resolved stellar content and the extended halo of NGC 5128 as a function of galactocentric distance, and trace the halo outward to its currently detectable limits.
Methods: We used Hubbl…
Near-ultraviolet to visible spectroscopy of the Themis and Polana-Eulalia complex families
Tatsumi, E.; Licandro, J.; Popescu, M. +2 more
Context. Spectrophotometry data of asteroids obtained in the 1980s showed that there are large variations in their near-ultraviolet (NUV) reflectance spectra. Reflectance spectra at NUV wavelengths are important because they help detect the presence of hydrated minerals and organics on the asteroid surfaces. However, the NUV wavelength region has …
The "Maggie" filament: Physical properties of a giant atomic cloud
Schneider, N.; Klessen, R. S.; Beuther, H. +19 more
Context. The atomic phase of the interstellar medium plays a key role in the formation process of molecular clouds. Due to the line-of-sight confusion in the Galactic plane that is associated with its ubiquity, atomic hydrogen emission has been challenging to study.
Aims: We investigate the physical properties of the "Maggie" filament, a larg…
eROSITA calibration and performance verification phase: High-mass X-ray binaries in the Magellanic Clouds
Haberl, F.; Udalski, A.; Freyberg, M. J. +8 more
Context. During its performance verification phase, the soft X-ray instrument eROSITA on board the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) spacecraft observed large regions in the Magellanic Clouds in which almost 40 known high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs, including candidates) are located.
Aims: We looked for new HMXBs in the eROSITA data, searched for…
The origin of early-type runaway stars from open clusters
Heber, U.; Irrgang, A.; Bhat, A.
Runaway stars are ejected from their place of birth in the Galactic disk, with some young B-type runaways found several tens of kiloparsecs from the plane traveling at speeds beyond the escape velocity, which calls for violent ejection processes. Young open clusters are a likely place of origin, and ejection may be either through N-body interactio…
Magnetic cloud prediction model for forecasting space weather relevant properties of Earth-directed coronal mass ejections
Nandy, Dibyendu; Pal, Sanchita; Kilpua, Emilia K. J.
Context. Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are major eruptive events on the Sun that result in the ejection of large-scale magnetic clouds (MCs) in interplanetary space, consisting of plasma with enhanced magnetic fields whose direction changes coherently when measured in situ. The severity of CME-induced geomagnetic perturbations and space weather im…
CHEOPS finds KELT-1b darker than expected in visible light. Discrepancy between the CHEOPS and TESS eclipse depths
Guterman, P.; Alonso, R.; Deleuil, M. +78 more
Recent studies based on photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) have suggested that the dayside of KELT-1b, a strongly irradiated brown dwarf, is significantly brighter in visible light than what would be expected based on Spitzer observations in the infrared. We observed eight eclipses of KELT-1b with CHaracterising ExOPl…
Stellar feedback in M83 as observed with MUSE. I. Overview, an unprecedented view of the stellar and gas kinematics and evidence of outflowing gas
Della Bruna, Lorenza; Robert, Carmelle; Rousseau-Nepton, Laurie +14 more
Context. Young massive stars inject energy and momentum into the surrounding gas, creating a multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) and regulating further star formation. The main challenge of studying stellar feedback proves to be the variety of scales spanned by this phenomenon, ranging from the immediate surrounding of the stars (H II regions, 1…
