First ultraviolet observations of two new cataclysmic variables 1E 0643-1648 and 4U 1849-31.
Motch, C.; Bonnet-Bidaud, J. M.; Mouchet, M.
The two hard X-ray sources 1 E0643-1648 and 4U 1849-31 have been observed in the range 1200-3200 Å with I.U.E.. They show ultraviolet spectra typical of cataclysmic variables. The distances inferred from the ultraviolet interstellar extinction are 300 pc and 600 pc respectively for 1 E0643-1648 and 4U 1849-31.
The line spectrum is characteriz…A study of ultraviolet spectroscopic and light variations in the X-ray binaries LMC X-4 and SMC X-1.
Zuiderwijk, E. J.; Hammerschlag-Hensberge, G.; van der Klis, M. +7 more
Low-resolution IUE spectra of the massive X-ray binaries LMC X-4 and SMC X-1 have been obtained between 1200 and 3200 A at several epochs in August 1979 and April 1980. Comparison of these observations with theoretical light curves for an X-ray heated tidally distorted star indicates the existence of a disk around the compact star. The resonance-l…
The hot component of KS Per (HD 30353)
Drilling, J. S.; Schonberner, D.
The presence of a hot companion for the single-lined spectroscopic binary KS Per (HD 30353) has been detected in a study of low-resolution IUE spectra. The system as a whole is very similar to Upsilon Sgr. The observations are consistent with a model in which the primary is a helium supergiant of about 1 solar mass and the secondary is an overlumi…
Hot stars in the bulge of M31 - Upper limit to the star formation rate
Deharveng, J. M.; Donas, J.; Monnet, G. +1 more
IUE satellite UV observations of the bulge in M 31 indicate upon comparison with previous photometric observations that the far-UV surface brightness distribution is probably similar to that in the B light, despite the discovery of a gradient in (UV-B) color at the very center of this galaxy. While no firm explanation is found for the observed UV …
The ultraviolet spectrum of the old novae HR Del, GK Per, RR Pic, andRS Oph.
Bianchini, A.; Rafanelli, P.; Rosino, L.
Spectroscopic observations of three old novae and a recurrent nova, all of them at minimum, have been carried out with the IUE satellite. The two slow novae HR Del and RR Pic have similar spectroscopic characters with absorption and emission features of high ionization over a continuum which does not follow a unique power law but seems to be forme…
On the detection of abundance stratifications in peculiar stars through the curve of growth method
Alecian, G.
Theoretical curves of growth for manganese are computed for an atmosphere with T(eff) = 12,000 K and log g = 4. It is shown that the curves of growth may be strongly affected by the presence in the atmosphere of a plane parallel layer where manganese is overabundant. The theoretical results are compared with observations of the Hg-Mn star Nv Her. …
On excitation through radiative pumping of the Fe II UV-mult. 191 lambda lambda 1785-88 angstrom observed with the IUE during the eclipse of 32 Cyg.
Reimers, D.; Hempe, K.
We show by means of high-resolution lUE spectra of 32 Cyg during and shortly after eclipse - there is a total eclipse of the B star in the UV - that the Fe II UV-multiplet 191 is pumped via the Fe II resonance UV-multiplet 9 λλ1260-76 Å. We show directly from observations 1. that all absorbed multiplet 9 photons are emitted as Fe II UV Mult. 191 l…
On the search for transition zone lines in late A type stars.
Praderie, F.; Crivellari, L.
Observations of the 1400-1800 A region in late A type stars are presented, which were obtained using the IUE satellite at low and high resolution. The calibrated energy distribution is derived and presents a large variation with wavelength in the spectral range due to Si I photoionization discontinuities. Emission lines formed in the transition re…
Stellar wind in the nucleus of IC 2149.
Perinotto, M.; Benvenuti, P.; Cerruti-Sola, M.
Low and high resolution spectra of the planetary nebula IC 2149 obtained with the IUE satellite reveal the existence of a stellar wind in the central star of the nebula. The terminal velocity is found from the CIV gamma 549 profile to be of 1440 plus or minus 100 km/sec. An effort to evaluate the associated mass loss rate gives values around 1/100…
The pulsation of the outer layers of the BET Cep-type variable BW Vul.
Sato, N.; de Jager, C.; Burger, M. +1 more
Eleven high-resolution ultraviolet spectrograms of BW Vul were obtained by means of the IUE over 1.6 periods to compare the pulsation of this star as observed in the strong far-UV resonance lines with observations of the UV lines of photospheric origin. The radial velocity curve of the C IV lines is different from the photospheric one, showing tha…
