XMM-Newton observations of AM CVn binaries
Cropper, M.; Ramsay, G.; Hakala, P. +3 more
We present the results of XMM-Newton observations of four AM CVn systems - AM CVn, CR Boo, HP Lib and GP Com. Their light curves show very different characteristics. The X-ray light curves show no coherent pulsations, suggesting the accreting white dwarfs have relatively low magnetic field strengths. Their spectra were best modelled using a multi-…
A mapping of martian water sublimation during early northern summer using OMEGA/Mars Express
Bibring, J. -P.; Gondet, B.; Langevin, Y. +8 more
The OMEGA imaging spectrometer aboard Mars Express has been used to map the water vapor abundance over the martian surface, from the analysis of the 2.6 µm band of H2O. As a preliminary result of this study, we present water vapor maps in the northern hemisphere at the time of the northern polar cap sublimation (Ls = 94-112 deg). The maps sh…
Discovery of X-ray eclipses from the transient source CXOGC J174540.0-290031 with XMM-Newton
Grosso, N.; Warwick, R. S.; Porquet, D. +4 more
We present the XMM-Newton observations obtained during four revolutions in Spring and Summer 2004, of CXOGC J174540.0-290031, a moderately bright transient X-ray source, located at only 2.9'' from Sgr A*. We report the discovery of sharp and deep X-ray eclipses, with a period of 27 961±5 s and a duration of about 1100±100 s, observed during the tw…
X-ray confirmation of the intermediate polar HT Cam
Mukai, K.; Haberl, F.; Gänsicke, B. T. +6 more
We report on the first pointed X-ray observations with XMM-Newton and RXTE satellites of the X-ray source RX J0757.0+6306 = HT Cam. We detect a strong 515 s X-ray modulation confirming the optical photometric period found in 1998, which definitively assigns this source to the intermediate polar class of magnetic cataclysmic variables. The lack of …
The young active binary star EK Draconis

The dM4.5e star G124-62 and its binary L dwarf companion DENIS-P J1441-0945. Common proper motion, distance, age, and masses
Neuhäuser, R.; Guenther, E.; Seifahrt, A.
We present astrometric and photometric measurements of the field binary L1 dwarf DENIS-P J1441-0945. Analysis of archival HST images and photometric parallax measurements give a distance of 34±7 pc and a proper motion close to that of the nearby high proper motion star G124-62. Comparison of SuperCOSMOS and 2MASS images confirms that these objects…
A survey for Fe 6.4 keV emission in young stellar objects in ρ Oph: The strong fluorescence from Elias 29
Tsujimoto, M.; Micela, G.; Favata, F. +2 more
We report the results of a search for 6.4 keV Fe fluorescent emission in Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) with measured accretion luminosities in the ρ Oph cloud, using the existing Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the region. A total of nine such YSOs have X-ray data with sufficiently high S/N for the 6.4 keV line to be potentially detected if …
Physical parameters of rich LMC clusters from modeling of deep HST colour-magnitude diagrams
Santiago, B. X.; Kerber, L. O.
We present the analysis of deep colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of five rich LMC clusters. The data were obtained with HST/WFPC2 in the F555W (~V) and F814W (~I) filters, reaching V555 ∼ 25. The sample of clusters is composed of NGC 1805 and NGC 1818, the youngest ones (τ < 100 Myr), NGC 1831 and NGC 1868, of intermediate-age ( 400 …
Observational evidence for the presence of PAHs in distant Luminous Infrared Galaxies using ISO and Spitzer
Elbaz, D.; Le Floc'h, E.; Dole, H. +1 more
We present ISOCAM 15 µm and MIPS 24 µm photometry of a sample of 16 distant Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) characterized by a median luminosity L_IR ∼ 2 × 1011~L⊙ and redshift z = 0.7 (distributed from z = 0.1 to 1.2). While some sources display 24/15 µm flux ratios also consistent with a featureless con…
Further evidence for a merger in Abell 2218 from an XMM-Newton observation
Finoguenov, A.; Böhringer, H.; Pratt, G. W.
The galaxy cluster Abell 2218, at z=0.171, is well-known for the discrepancy between mass estimates derived from X-ray and strong lensing analyses. With the present XMM-Newton observation, we are able to trace the gas density and temperature profiles out to a radius of ∼ 1400~h70-1 kpc (approximately the virial radius of the …
