Herschel-Planck dust optical depth and column density maps. II. Perseus
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201526597 Bibcode: 2016A&A...587A.106Z

Alves, João; Bouy, Hervé; Lada, Charles J. +2 more

We present optical depth and temperature maps of the Perseus molecular cloud, obtained combining dust emission data from the Herschel and Planck satellites and 2MASS/NIR dust extinction maps. The maps have a resolution of 36 arcsec in the Herschel regions, and of 5 arcmin elsewhere. The dynamic range of the optical depth map ranges from 1 × 10

Constraints on the location of a possible 9th planet derived from the Cassini data

To explain the unusual distribution of Kuiper belt objects, several authors have advocated the existence of a super-Earth planet in the outer solar system. It has recently been proposed that a 10 M object with an orbit of 700 AU semi major axis and 0.6 eccentricity can explain the observed distribution of Kuiper belt objects around Sed…

The XMM Cluster Outskirts Project (X-COP): Physical conditions of Abell 2142 up to the virial radius
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201628183 Bibcode: 2016A&A...595A..42T

Context. Galaxy clusters are continuously growing through the accretion of matter in their outskirts. This process induces inhomogeneities in the gas density distribution (clumping) that need to be taken into account to recover the physical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) at large radii.
Aims: We studied the thermodynamic properti…

Planck intermediate results. XXXI. Microwave survey of Galactic supernova remnants
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201425022 Bibcode: 2016A&A...586A.134P

Kneissl, R.; Miville-Deschênes, M. -A.; Bernard, J. -P. +160 more

The all-sky Planck survey in 9 frequency bands was used to search for emission from all 274 known Galactic supernova remnants. Of these, 16 were detected in at least two Planck frequencies. The radio-through-microwave spectral energy distributions were compiled to determine the mechanism for microwave emission. In only one case, IC 443, is there h…

Planck 2015 results. V. LFI calibration
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201526632 Bibcode: 2016A&A...594A...5P

We present a description of the pipeline used to calibrate the Planck Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) timelines into thermodynamic temperatures for the Planck 2015 data release, covering four years of uninterrupted operations. As in the 2013 data release, our calibrator is provided by the spin-synchronous modulation of the cosmic microwave backgrou…

Exploring the mass assembly of the early-type disc galaxy NGC 3115 with MUSE
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201628743 Bibcode: 2016A&A...591A.143G

Krajnović, D.; Guérou, A.; Emsellem, E. +3 more

We present MUSE integral field spectroscopic data of the S0 galaxy NGC 3115 obtained during the instrument commissioning at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). We analyse the galaxy stellar kinematics and stellar populations and present two-dimensional maps of their associated quantities. We thus illustrate the capacity of MUSE to map extra-galact…

Characterization of foreground emission on degree angular scales for CMB B-mode observations . Thermal dust and synchrotron signal from Planck and WMAP data
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201527678 Bibcode: 2016A&A...588A..65K

Aumont, J.; Baccigalupi, C.; Bersanelli, M. +2 more

We quantify the contamination from polarized diffuse Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emissions to the B modes of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies on the degree angular scale, using data from the Planck and Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellites. We compute power spectra of foreground polarized emissions in 3…

DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201526998 Bibcode: 2016A&A...594A...3P

Bernard, J. -P.; Planck Collaboration; Ade, P. A. R. +168 more

We present the current accounting of systematic effect uncertainties for the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) that are relevant to the 2015 release of the Planck cosmological results, showing the robustness and consistency of our data set, especially for polarization analysis. We use two complementary approaches: (I) simulations based on measured da…

The bolometric and UV attenuation in normal spiral galaxies of the Herschel Reference Survey
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201527586 Bibcode: 2016A&A...586A..13V

Ciesla, L.; Boquien, M.; Fritz, J. +11 more

The dust in nearby galaxies absorbs a fraction of the UV-optical-near-infrared radiation produced by stars. This energy is consequently re-emitted in the infrared. We investigate the portion of the stellar radiation absorbed by spiral galaxies from the Herschel Reference Survey (HRS) by modelling their UV-to-submillimetre spectral energy distribut…

Context. This paper describes the initial modelling of gas and dust data acquired in August and September 2014 from the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft when it was in close proximity to the nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.
Aims: This work is an attempt to provide a self-consistent model of the innermost gas and dust coma…
