XMM-Newton observations of ultraluminous X-ray sources in nearby galaxies
Cappi, M.; Piconcelli, E.; Foschini, L. +9 more
An XMM-Newton study of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULX) has been performed in a sample of 10 nearby Seyfert galaxies. Eighteen ULX have been found with positional uncertainty of about 4''. The large collecting area of XMM-Newton makes the statistics sufficient to perform spectral fitting with simple models in 8 cases. The main results of the pres…
Carbon-rich giants in the HR diagram and their luminosity function
Bergeat, J.; Knapik, A.; Rutily, B.
The luminosity function (LF) of nearly 300 Galactic carbon giants is derived. Adding BaII giants and various related objects, about 370 objects are located in the RGB and AGB portions of the theoretical HR diagram. As intermediate steps, (1) bolometric corrections are calibrated against selected intrinsic color indices; (2) the diagram of photomet…

86 GHz SiO maser survey of late-type stars in the Inner Galaxy. I. Observational data
Menten, K. M.; Omont, A.; Habing, H. J. +2 more
We present 86 GHz (v = 1, J = 2 -> 1) SiO maser line observations with the IRAM 30-m telescope of a sample of 441 late-type stars in the Inner Galaxy ( -4 degr < l < +30 degr ). These stars were selected on the basis of their infrared magnitudes and colours from the ISOGAL and MSX catalogues. SiO maser emission was detected in 271 sources…
Deep Lyα imaging of two z = 2.04 GRB host galaxy fields
Pedersen, H.; Fynbo, J. P. U.; Gorosabel, J. +8 more
We report on the results of deep narrow-band Lyα and broad-band U and I imaging of the fields of two Gamma-Ray bursts at redshift z=2.04 (GRB 000301C and GRB 000926). We find that the host galaxy of GRB 000926 is an extended (more than 2 arcsec), strong Lyα emitter with a rest-frame equivalent width of 71+20-15 Å. The galaxy …
Evidence for chemical evolution in the spectra of high redshift galaxies
Böhm, A.; Stahl, O.; Noll, S. +13 more
Using a sample of 57 VLT FORS spectra in the redshift range 1.37<z<3.40 (selected mainly from the FORS Deep Field survey) and a comparison sample with 36 IUE spectra of local (z ~ 0) starburst galaxies we derive C IV and Si IV equivalent width values and estimate metallicities of starburst galaxies as a function of redshift. Assuming that a …
Proper motions of open clusters based on the TYCHO2 Catalogue. II. Clusters farther than 1 kpc
Dias, W. S.; Lépine, J. R. D.; Alessi, B. S.
We determined the mean absolute proper motion of 94 open clusters situated farther than 1 kpc from the Sun. The results are derived from the stellar proper motion data given in the Tycho2 Catalogue. The mean proper motion of the clusters and membership probability of individual stars were obtained from the proper motion data by applying the statis…
Off-limb EUV line profiles and the search for wave activity in the low corona
Harrison, R. A.; Hood, A. W.; Pike, C. D.
Two extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) observations are used to examine the off-limb characteristics of emission line widths of the million K Mg X 625 Å line. To obtain sufficient statistical accuracy, the observations were made over long periods of time and a pixel summing technique is used. The observations are made above the western limb, for quiet coro…
The Eagle's EGGs: Fertile or sterile?
Andersen, M.; McCaughrean, M. J.
We present a deep, high spatial resolution (0.35 arcsec FWHM), near-infrared (1-2.5 mu m) imaging survey of the Eagle Nebula, M 16, made with the VLT, centred on the famous elephant trunks. We compare these data with the existing HST optical images to search for evidence of ongoing or recent star formation in the trunks, and in particular in the 7…
Wind variability of B supergiants. IV. A survey of IUE time-series data of 11 B0 to B3 stars
Massa, D.; Prinja, R. K.; Fullerton, A. W.
We present the most suitable data sets available in the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) archive for the study of time-dependent stellar winds in early B supergiants. The UV line profile variability in 11 B0 to B3 stars is analysed, compared and discussed, based on 16 separate data sets comprising over 600 homogeneously reduced high-resolu…
