Luminosity-dependent evolution of soft X-ray selected AGN. New Chandra and XMM-Newton surveys
Hasinger, G.; Schmidt, M.; Miyaji, T.
We present new results on the cosmological evolution of unabsorbed (type-1) active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected in the soft (0.5-2 keV) X-ray band. From a variety of ROSAT, XMM-Newton and Chandra surveys we selected a total of ~1000 AGN with an unprecedented spectroscopic and photometric optical/NIR identification completeness. For the first tim…
The XMM-Newton view of PG quasars. I. X-ray continuum and absorption
Guainazzi, M.; Schartel, N.; Rodríguez-Pascual, P. M. +3 more
We present results of a systematic analysis of the XMM-Newton spectra of 40 quasars (QSOs) (z≤1.72) from the Palomar-Green (PG) Bright Quasar Survey sample (MB<-23). The sample includes 35 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) and 5 radio-loud quasars (RLQs). The analysis of the spectra above 2 keV reveals that the hard X-ray continuum emission…
The structural and scaling properties of nearby galaxy clusters. II. The M-T relation
Arnaud, M.; Pointecouteau, E.; Pratt, G. W.
Using a sample of ten nearby (z≲ 0.15), relaxed galaxy clusters in the temperature range [2-9]~keV, we have investigated the scaling relation between the mass at various density contrasts (δ=2500,1000,500,200) and the cluster temperature. The masses are derived from NFW-type model fits to mass profiles, obtained under the hydrostatic assumption us…
A simple test for periodic signals in red noise
Vaughan, S.
We demonstrate a simple method for testing the significance of peaks in the periodogram of red noise data. The procedure was designed to test for spurious periodicities in X-ray light curves of active galaxies, but can be used quite generally to test for periodic components against a background noise spectrum assumed to have a power law shape. The…
X-ray obscuration and obscured AGN in the local universe
Perola, G. C.; Guainazzi, M.; Matt, G.
We discuss the X-ray properties of 49 local (z<0.035) Seyfert 2 galaxies with HST/WFC2 high-resolution optical coverage. It includes the results of 26 still unpublished Chandra and XMM-Newton observations, which yield 25 (22) new X-ray detections in the 0.5-2 keV (2-10 keV) energy band. Our sample covers a range in the 2-10 keV observed flux, F…
The structural and scaling properties of nearby galaxy clusters. I. The universal mass profile
Arnaud, M.; Pointecouteau, E.; Pratt, G. W.
We present the integrated mass profiles for a sample of ten nearby (z<~0.15), relaxed galaxy clusters, covering a temperature range of [2-9] keV, observed with XMM-Newton. The mass profiles were derived from the observed gas density and temperature profiles under the hypothesis of spherical symmetry and hydrostatic equilibrium. All ten mass pro…
INTEGRAL insight into the inner parts of the Galaxy. High mass X-ray binaries
Sunyaev, R.; Revnivtsev, M.; Lutovinov, A. +3 more
Since its launch INTEGRAL has devoted a significant fraction of its observing time to the Galactic plane region. We present the results of INTEGRAL observations of the inner spiral arms of the Galaxy (Norma, Scutum and Sagittarius) with attention to high mass X-ray binaries. The increased sensitivity of the survey and possibility to detect absorbe…
Temperature and entropy profiles of nearby cooling flow clusters observed with XMM-Newton
Kaastra, J. S.; Tamura, T.; Piffaretti, R. +1 more
We investigate temperature and entropy profiles of 13 nearby cooling flow clusters observed with the EPIC cameras of XMM-Newton. When normalized and scaled by the virial radius the temperature profiles turn out to be remarkably similar. At large radii the temperature profiles show a clear decline starting from a break radius at ~0.1 rvir
X-rays from accretion shocks in T Tauri stars: The case of BP Tau
Schmitt, J. H. M. M.; Ness, J. -U.; Robrade, J. +2 more
We present an XMM-Newton observation of the classical T Tauri star BP Tau. In the XMM-Newton RGS spectrum the O vii triplet is clearly detected with a very weak forbidden line indicating high plasma densities and/or a high UV flux environment. At the same time concurrent UV data point to a small hot spot filling factor suggesting an accretion funn…
An XMM-Newton view of the cluster of galaxies Abell 85
Forman, W.; Durret, F.; Lima Neto, G. B.
We have observed the cluster of galaxies Abell 85 with XMM-Newton. These data have allowed us in a previous paper to confirm the existence of the extended 4 Mpc filament detected by the ROSAT PSPC in the neighbourhood of this cluster, and to determine an X-ray temperature of about ~ 2 keV. We now present a thorough analysis of the properties of th…
