Infrared spectroscopy of interstellar apolar ice analogs
van Dishoeck, E. F.; Tielens, A. G. G. M.; Boogert, A. C. A. +2 more
Apolar ices have been observed in several regions in dense clouds and are likely dominated by molecules such as CO, CO_2 and the infrared inactive molecules O_2 and N_2. Interstellar solid CO has been well characterized by ground-based high resolution measurements. Recent ISO results showed the ubiquitous presence of abundant CO_2 ice and the pres…
Warm molecular envelope of M giants and Miras: a new molecule forming region unmasked by the ISO SWS.
Ohnaka, K.; Yamamura, I.; Tsuji, T. +1 more
Our observations with the ISO SWS revealed that H_2_O band at 2.7µm appears as absorption already in an M2 giant β Peg and strengthens towards later M giants. Further, CO_2_ 4.2µm band appears as absorption in an M7 giant SW Vir and especially strong in a Mira variable S Vir. The excitation temperatures of these molecular bands estimat…
First results of ISO-SWS observations of Saturn: detection of CO_2_, CH_3_C_2_H, C_4_H_2_ and tropospheric H_2_O.
Beintema, D. A.; Lellouch, E.; Encrenaz, T. +16 more
The spectrum of Saturn has been recorded between 4.5 and 16.0µm with the grating mode of the Short-Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) of ISO. The resolving power is 1500. The main results of this observation are (1) the detection of CO_2_, CH_3_C_2_H and C_4_H_2_ in the stratosphere and (2) the detection of H_2_O in the troposphere. In the 4.5-5.…
Infrared spectral energy distributions of the interacting galaxies ARP 244, NGC 6240, and ARP 220.
Schulz, B.; Klaas, U.; Heinrichsen, I. +1 more
For the luminous galaxies Arp 244, NGC 6240 and Arp 220 detailed infrared spectral energy distributions between 3 and 200µm obtained with ISOPHOT are presented. The maximum of the infrared energy distribution can now clearly be determined. The SEDs can be well represented by cold dust emission with temperatures of 30-50K which by far dominat…
ISOCAM 7 micron deep survey of the Lockman Hole: A mid-infrared search for primeval galaxies
Sanders, D. B.; Kawara, K.; Taniguchi, Y. +11 more
We present results of our 7 mu m deep survey program made with ISOCAM, the infrared camera of ISO (Infrared Space Observatory). We have found 15 sources above a 5 sigma_rms significance in a small selected area (3(') x 3(') ) in the Lockman HI hole. Among the 15 sources, 14 objects have also been observed in the near infrared (NIR: ~ 2 mu m). The …
Widespread water vapour absorption in SGR B2.
Clegg, P.; Caux, E.; Cernicharo, J. +6 more
We report the discovery of widespread water vapour absorption in the 2_12_-1_01_ 179.5µm transition toward the SgrB2 molecular cloud. The data were obtained with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) on board the ISO satellite. A raster map centered on SgrB2 made with the LWS grating clearly shows the 179.5µm H_2_O line in absorption …
Detection of [O I] 63µm in absorption toward SGR B2.
Prusti, T.; Liseau, R.; Burgdorf, M. +26 more
A high signal-to-noise 52-90µm spectrum is presented for the central part of the Sagittarius B2 complex. The data were obtained with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The [O I] 63µm line is detected in absorption even at the grating spectral resolution of 0.29µm. A lower limit for the…
Mid-IR colors and star formation in Virgo and Coma galaxies.
Boulanger, F.; Sauvage, M.; Contursi, A. +9 more
We present observations of the global emission of a sample of spiral and irregular galaxies in the Virgo cluster and the Coma supercluster. These observations have been made with the camera ISOCAM on board the Infrared Space Observatory, through two broad filters centered respectively at 6.75 and 15.0µm. The corresponding fluxes are correcte…
Search for brightness fluctuations in the zodiacal light at 25 MU M with ISO
Abraham, Peter; Lemke, Dietrich; Leinert, Christoph
We mapped at 25 mu m five ~0.5(deg) x0.5(deg) fields at low, intermediate and high ecliptic latitude with the photometer onboard the Infrared Space Observatory. The goal was to search for potential structures in the zodiacal light. No structures were seen in these five sample fields. For an aperture of 3' diameter we find an upper limit for the un…
Mid-infrared spectroscopy of the hyperluminous infrared galaxy IRAS P09104+4109.
Kawara, K.; Murayama, T.; Taniguchi, Y. +2 more
We present mid-infrared spectroscopy of the hyperluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 09104+4109 based on observations with ISOCAM CVF. We have detected the emission peak around 8µm as well as the absorption feature around 10µm possibly due to silicate, providing evidence for a dusty torus around the central engine. Comparing the observationa…
