Ammonium hydrosulfide (NH4SH) as a potentially significant sulfur sink in interstellar ices
van Dishoeck, E. F.; Slavicinska, K.; Kavanagh, P. J. +7 more
Context. Sulfur is depleted with respect to its cosmic standard abundance in dense star-forming regions. It has been suggested that this depletion is caused by the freeze-out of sulfur on interstellar dust grains, but the observed abundances and upper limits of sulfur-bearing ices remain too low to account for all of the missing sulfur. Toward the…
Ice inventory towards the protostar Ced 110 IRS4 observed with the James Webb Space Telescope: Results from the Early Release Science Ice Age program
Sun, F.; Egami, E.; van Dishoeck, E. F. +37 more
Context. Protostars contain icy ingredients necessary for the formation of potential habitable worlds, therefore, it is crucial to understand their chemical and physical environments. This work is focused on the ice features towards the binary protostellar system Ced 110 IRS4A and IRS4B, separated by 250 au and observed with James Webb Space Teles…
JOYS: The [D/H] abundance derived from protostellar outflows across the Galactic disk measured with JWST
Henning, T.; Güdel, M.; Ray, T. P. +11 more
Context. The total deuterium abundance [D/H] in the universe is set by just two processes: the creation of deuterium in Big Bang nucleosynthesis at an abundance of [D/H] = 2.58 ± 0.13 × 10‑5, and its destruction within stellar interiors (astration). Measurements of variations in the total [D/H] abundance can thus potentially provide a p…
PDRs4All. IV. An embarrassment of riches: Aromatic infrared bands in the Orion Bar
Hartigan, Patrick; Zhang, Yong; Gordon, Karl D. +136 more
Context. Mid-infrared observations of photodissociation regions (PDRs) are dominated by strong emission features called aromatic infrared bands (AIBs). The most prominent AIBs are found at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.2 µm. The most sensitive, highest-resolution infrared spectral imaging data ever taken of the prototypical PDR, the Orion Bar, have b…
JWST MIRI and NIRCam observations of NGC 891 and its circumgalactic medium
Saintonge, Amélie; Gordon, Karl D.; Sandstrom, Karin M. +37 more
We present new JWST observations of the nearby, prototypical edge-on, spiral galaxy NGC 891. The northern half of the disk was observed with NIRCam in its F150W and F277W filters. Absorption is clearly visible in the mid-plane of the F150W image, along with vertical dusty plumes that closely resemble the ones seen in the optical. A ∼10 × 3 kpc
JOYS+ study of solid-state 12C/13C isotope ratios in protostellar envelopes: Observations of CO and CO2 ice with the James Webb Space Telescope
van Dishoeck, E. F.; Nazari, P.; Rocha, W. R. M. +12 more
Context. The carbon isotope ratio is a powerful tool for studying the evolution of stellar systems due to its sensitivity to the local chemical environment. Recent detections of CO isotopologs in disks and exoplanet atmospheres revealed a high variability in the isotope abundance, ponting towards significant fractionation in these systems. In orde…
Modeling the spectral energy distribution of starburst galaxies. The role of photodissociation regions
Buat, V.; Boquien, M.; Burgarella, D. +3 more
Context. Analyzing multiwavelength observations of galaxies from the far-ultraviolet to the millimeter domains provides a wealth of information on the physical properties of galaxies and their evolution across cosmic time. Existing or upcoming ground-based or space-borne facilities with enhanced sensitivities and resolutions open an unprecedented …
Abundances of trace constituents in Jupiter's atmosphere inferred from Herschel/PACS observations
Villanueva, G. L.; Hartogh, P.; Lellouch, E. +4 more
Context. On October 31, 2009, the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) on board the Herschel Space Observatory observed far-infrared spectra of Jupiter in the wavelength range between 50 and 220 µm as part of the program "Water and Related Chemistry in the Solar System". The spectra have an effective spectral resolution between 900 a…
Imaging the innermost circumstellar environment of the red supergiant WOH G64 in the Large Magellanic Cloud
van Loon, J. Th.; Weigelt, G.; Hofmann, K. -H. +3 more
Context. Significant mass loss in the red supergiant (RSG) phase has great influence on the evolution of massive stars and their final fate as supernovae. Aims. We present near-infrared interferometric imaging of the circumstellar environment of the dust-enshrouded RSG WOH G64 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Methods. WOH G64 was observed with the G…
XMM-SERVS X-ray extended Galaxy Cluster (XVXGC) catalog
Jiang, Linhua; Luo, Bin; Erben, Thomas +4 more
Context. To explain the well-known tension between cosmological parameter constraints obtained from the primary cosmic microwave background (CMB) and those drawn from X-ray-selected galaxy cluster samples identified with early data, we propose a possible explanation for the incompleteness of detected clusters being higher than estimated. Specifica…
