Boss 1985 : mass loss investigation based on IUE spectra.

Abstract

From recent IUE observations of Boss 1985 - a VV Cep type spectroscopic binary - the authors deduce the mass loss rate of the primary M star using a non-spherical three-dimensional line transfer code applied on Fe II UV mult. 9 lines. Best agreement between observed and computed line profiles is obtained using wind velocity of 10±5 km s-1, stochastic velocity of 20±5 km s-1 and a total mass loss rate of 1.0±0.5×10-7 M_sun; yr-1. However evidence for non-negligible population of higher excitation levels of Fe II, which the authors have neglected in their mass loss determination, makes it necessary to consider this value as a lower limit.
