Abstract

We present the first results of high dispersion (Δλ ≃ 0.2 Å) IUE spectra of the possible X-ray binary V 861 Sco (HD 152667) taken at several orbital phases. Contemporary optical spectroscopy, uvbyβ and infrared photometry are also reported.

The UV spectrum is quite normal for the spectral type (B0Ia), with P Cygni profiles on a number of lines. Several of these lines show sharp multiple absorption components. The high ionisation interstellar species are not significantly enhanced by possible Xray emission. There are no large phase dependent variations in the UV spectra available; the optical spectra show significant changes, particularly at Hα, which is seen in absorption and emission at different times.

Our photometry confirms earlier results in general. The IR data do not support an earlier suggestion of a non-stellar secondary; indeed, our data lend no support to the hypothesis of a compact companion. The mass loss rate is found to be 1 10-5 Msun yr-1.
