Abstract

The acquisition of ultraviolet data by the geosynchronous IUE satellite since its launch in 1978 is discussed, with emphasis on the procedure for obtaining IUE data from the Vilspa station near Madrid. Images are obtained by IUE every two hours on the average, with exposures lasting from 0.4 sec to 21 hours. UV spectra are derived from the images using the IUESIPS program. IUE data are provided in the form of recorded magnetic tape, photos, and graphs. Among the many astronomical objects previously investigatd by IUE are gaseous nebulae, binary star systems, novae, and supernovae. Techniques have been developed to permit continued attitude control of IUE with its remaining two gyroscopes.
