Abstract

The method of wavelength coincidence statistics (WCS) is applied to the ultraviolet spectrum of the Hg-Mn star Kappa Cnc. Methodological checks involving searches for the element Mn, Cr, and Fe yield positive results, consistent with previous spectroscopic studies of this star. A search for heavy elements (Z in the range 74-81) in the region 1960-3230 A provides weak evidence to support the identification of Os II and Hg I; no confirmation of the presence of Au or Pt is forthcoming from the investigation. By means of a differential analysis using the Os II 2367 A line, the abundance of osmium is found to be 5.5 + or - 1.0 dex. Certain implications of these results for theories designed to account for the anomalous abundances of certain elements in chemically peculiar (CP) stars are discussed briefly.
