Abstract
Results are presented of the Ulysses mission during its first orbit. There are new insights into the structure of the interplanetary magnetic field, the role of interstellar neutrals within the heliosphere, the acceleration of charged particles to very high energies in corotating interaction regions, the effect of these regions on the propagation of galactic cosmic rays and on the anomalous component of cosmic rays, the effect of the sun's magnetic activity cycle on these particles, and in particular the importance of the fast solar wind as the dominant state of the solar wind and its effect on the global structure of the heliosphere.
