Abstract
Recent results from the Ulysses spacecraft as it observed particles and fields above the Sun's south polar cap, returned rapidly across the equator and traversed the northern solar hemisphere are presented in subsequent articles. This introduction provides a brief description of the spacecraft, the experiments, the unique trajectory and highlights of some of the principal scientific results.
